The next Table Tonic chapter begins!

I have a new key on my keyring Tonic-ettes. And I'm not being metaphorical! It's blue. And it opens the door to THE SOON-TO-OPEN TABLE TONIC SHOP! Yes, a real life shop!
And if you're ever on the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney, pop over to Avalon because that's where it is going to be - Right near two regular haunts of mine - Franks Bar and my other fave, Mark Tuckey Home!

(above) The site of the new Table Tonic retail store!

Of course I'm going to keep you all very well informed, so be sure to check back for updates. And bear with the potentially sporadic blog posts. It's full steam ahead! How I will do it all is anyone's guess, but hey - like I always say: "Better to give it a good go and find out than to die wondering". All I can say is thank heavens for Mr Tonic - my architect/engineer/painter/IT manager... And yes, the Table Tonic online store will absolutely keep going, but the retail store will have a whole bunch of extra goodies. It's going to be heaven on earth. The official address? Table Tonic, Shop 6, 20 Avalon Parade. Let the fun begin!

In other news, my Sister in Law is in labour as we speak!!!! What's the expression - "It never rains, it pours"...

Happy customer(s) alert: "My TT Mexican Suzani"

More than any other Table Tonic product, it's the beautiful Mexican Suzanis that seem to have the most interesting post-purchase lives! And I just love hearing all about them! I'm not sure if you've heard of (beautiful kid's clothing brand) Coco and Ginger but if you haven't, put them on your radar Tonic-ettes! Anoushka has a few of their beautiful dresses and we literally get stopped in the street every time she wears one! Clever Coco and Ginger head-honcho Saffron recently sent me the following email after purchasing some TT: "Hi Louise, Just thought you might like to see where your gorgeous Table Tonic Mexican Suzani ended up. Next Summer's collection is called 'Frida's Mexican Afternoon' so it was perfection!". Thanks Saffron! Click to visit Coco and Ginger.

Pretty huh? Another Table Tonic customer sent me this email last week: "Hi Louise, I finally got round to stretching my Orange Mexican Suzani and hanging it in our stair well. I decided against a square frame as it didn't fit into the space as well so now I have enough leftover for a table runner. It gets the tick of approval from the whole family!"

Click to view our full range of Mexican Suzanis. And PSSSSST! Don't forget to use code EASTER15 at checkout for 15% off everything at tabletonic.com.au (ends Sunday)! Happy shopping!

On sale now: Inside Out May/June issue!

The May/June issue of Inside Out magazine is on sale now! This one's a visual celebration of "all things artistic, creative and innovative" when it comes to that special place – the home. Sounds good, right? Let's press on then.

So. What's inside?

ARTFUL DREAMING – THE GALLERY SHOP A gallery shopfront and adjoining private residence in Sydney's Charing Cross celebrates unique art with designs that bring Indigenous and modern Australia closer together in a celebration of art and all that it represents.

TAKE TO ART: A gallery of dramatic artworks form the decorative foundations of a high-style rental home in Sydney that mixes modern touches with decorative antiques and a robust contemporary art collection. On their home's eclectic aesthetic, the couple (John & Peter of Canteen Restaurant, Carriageworks) explain "We like there to be comedy in design; we don't like things to be too serious".

BRIGHT STAR – DAIMON DOWNEY: Inside Out magazine visits the home of artist and former Sneaky Sound System member Daimon Downey who confesses that anything and everything can become a canvas when his creativity sets in (friend and piano included.) This feature was styled by Mr Jason Grant. It was definitely the highlight for me! Here's a peek (taken from MJG's fab blog):

DESIGN SOLUTIONS – COLLECTED SOUL: The May/June issue of Inside Out magazine visits the swoon-worthy emporium I Like Birds in Sydney's Paddington, (which doubles as the owner's enchanting home) to find out the secrets to success when it comes to decorating with unique collections, miscellaneous objects and divine artworks.

GARDEN – COOL CLASSIC: Inside Out magazine visits the sublime Mayfield Garden, located in the Central Tablelands of NSW to admire the regal beauty and rich green hues of this English-style parkland. Now open to the public six weekends a year, this private garden oasis in Oberon can be enjoyed by all.

PS The Home Life website has had a bit lot of a facelift, so go poke around. It's a bit terrific! And don't foget to bookmark the Inside Out blog!

Q and A with "Juicemaster" Jason Vale!

I recently had the (pee-my-pants-exciting!) opportunity to quizz "Juicemaster" Jason Vale (aka "the Jamie Oliver of the health & juicing world") on his top tips for making fresh, funky juice. Jason recently launched the brilliant new Phillips Quick Clean juicer (which I told you all about last week) in Sydney (that's him at the launch below) and I am so happy to be able to share his juicing-genius with you all!

Table Tonic: I was amazed to learn in your new book, The Funky Fresh Juice Book, that the pith of citrus fruits is best left on for "maximum nutrition". Why is this? Jason Vale: Most people, when making orange juice, tend to cut an orange in half and use a citrus press. When you do this you lose many of the nutrients as you are not juicing the 'whole' orange. Orange juice is a great source for vitamin C, but the benefit of oranges also provides an excellent source of vitamin A, B vitamins, calcium, folate and potassium. Because oranges are also rich in a type of flavanone, known as herperidin, they are also helpful in bringing high blood pressure levels down, lowering cholesterol, and reducing risks of heart disease. The highest concentration of herperidin is found in the white pulp of the orange, which is one of the reasons you should peel the orange before juicing but leave the white pith on. Using this method also means it is thicker and more of a meal than a juice. The other reason is that you just get more juice, about 10 per cent more, when you juice the whole orange in the Philips Quick Clean juicer.

TT: What is the best speed to juice greens on? 1 or 2? Slow or fast? JV: When juicing green leafy vegetables, always pack them in the feeding tube tight and make sure to keep the juicer on 'off'. Then put it on slow speed to get maximum juice from your produce.

TT: I've read that it can be beneficial to mix at least a third water/coconut water into juices? Is this something you do? JV: There is nothing wrong with doing this as coconut water is one of the best natural 'juices' on earth. I tend to drink coconut water straight or mix with some soft fruit in a blender to make a quick smoothie.

TT: If you were to create a Table Tonic "tonic", what would be in it? JV: A freshly extracted juice combo of apples, spinach, ginger, mint, cucumber, zucchini, raw beet and broccoli. Ginger is nature's Dr Juice and the more you can handle the better!

There you have it. A tailor-made Table Tonic "tonic" designed by the man himself! I'll be trying it ASAP! Jason's fab new book, The Funky Fresh Juice Book contains over 100 "funky 'n' fresh" juice and smoothie recipes. Pre-order your copy here. But for now, here's a taste of what you can expect:

Happy juicing Tonic-ettes!

Modern Wisdom

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

The conscious shopper: Buy a bag, FEED a child.

Lauren Bush (FEED CEO and new wife of Ralph Lauren's son David) traveled as a student ambassador through the UN World Food Programme (WFP). During her travels, she saw food rations of beans, barley, and rice being distributed to countries in need, in large burlap sacks. She took this concept, launched FEED Projects and developed it into the FEED 1 Bag (that's me with mine below). Proceeds from the sale of each FEED 1 Bag ($90) provide school meals to 1 child for 1 whole year through the UN World Food Programme. How freakin' fantastic is that?

(above) the FEED 1 Bag, $9o from Kindred Spirits

As I demonstrate above, it's chic as all hell and (wait for it) reversible! Natural burlap/hessian on one side (perfect for groceries) and off white 100% organic cotton on the other side (great for the beach). The cotton also side has two side pockets and a big interior pocket, making it a great candidate for a diaper bag! And it's huge to boot! 38cm wide x 38cm high x 15.5cm deep with 28cm drop handles.

Click here to purchase your FEED bag from Kindred Spirits (shipping is free within Australia!) and know that you are feeding 1 child for 1 year and investing in a child's future. And bonus points - you get to feel a bit eco-chic at the same time!

TT Roadtest: The Philips QuickClean Juicer

Philips recently announced the launch of their brand spankers new QuickClean Juicer, and guess what? TT got one to roadtest(!), so if juicing is something you've been thinking about starting (go you!), listen up.

The biggest hassle when it comes to juicing is the washing up (many will agree!), but this little beauty can be cleaned within a minute. Truly! Let me explain: The "inverted electro-polished sieve" (it's really smooth) means that fibers from your fruit and veggies don't get stuck in the "mesh", making it mega simple to clean. (I've used juicers where the fibres do get stuck in the mesh and they're a nightmare to clean). TT's other fave features include:
:: The extra-large (80cm) feeding tube (no need to pre-cut fruit/veg before juicing!). :: Super easy to assembly and just as easy to take apart. :: The pulp is all collected in one place, which means you don’t need to scrape off pulp from other parts such as the lid (oh, and if you have chickens like us? Give them the pulp, they love it!). :: All removable parts of the juicer are also dishwasher safe. That said, I find it a cinch to wash up under the tap, provided you do it immediately after making/drinking your juice. :: The jug it comes with is awesome. It's not only huge, but it holds back the froth and any ice I throw in the jug prior to juicing. Ice cold, fresh squeezed fruit and veggie juice? I mean, really. What else is there?

Juice Master extraordinaire and Philips juicer spokesperson,
Jason Vale (above) - remember him from Hungry for Change? - has been promoting the health benefits of fruit and veg juices for over a decade and believes that having the right tools is crucial for successful juicing. “The thing that people usually complain about more than anything else when it comes to juicing is the cleaning. Philips has listened – it now takes less than a minute to clean your machine,” said Jason Vale. “I’m passionate about juicing – I juice two or three times every day and I need a machine that will take the job on.” Jason Vale will be in Australia in April to launch his new book, The Funky Fresh Juice Book (below), and will be conducting live demonstrations as well as sharing his personal story about how he improved his health and gained a new life through juicing.

Click to buy The Funky Fresh Juice Book (above).

The Philips QuickClean Juicer is available at major department and electrical stores NOW! And PS Between now and May 31, Philips are giving you a gift with the purchase of a QuickClean Juicer including the choice between a 6 month magazine subscription from a selection of these great mags or a $30 eftpos gift card (click for offer terms and conditions).
